Mumbai - Mangalore

I intend to drive down on 18th October 2008 from Mumbai to Mangalore with a stopover via Mookambika. Hearing a lot about the condition of the roads between Hubli and Mangalore. Can anyone give me tips about the condition about this road. Any tips which will assist be for my travel regarding, good short stopovers, food, night hault are welcome.
